3D model of the Arringatore

The 3D model of the Arringatore (Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Firenze, Italy) has been produced with active 3D scanning (laser-based system) in the framework of a restoration project (2008-2009). It is a Romano-Etruscan masterpiece from the late second century or early first century BCE in the Roman style and depicts an Etruscan man, Aule Metele, wearing a short Roman toga and footwear. His right arm is raised to indicate that he is an orator addressing the public.

Capsella Samagher - Photograph

The Capsella Samagher (Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Venice, Italy) is an important reliquary (height 18,5 cm, length 20,5 cm, width 16,01), which was discovered in Samagher (Pula, Croatia) in 1906 under the altar of the Church of St. Hermagoras. It is in carved ivory with corner reinforcements and silver accessories. Probably of Roman craftsmanship, it is of exceptional value for the history of early Christian art, the history of the Church and the history of the Roman Empire because of the refined decoration in relief on the lid and on all four sides. The image is a digital photograph produced by Alinari.

Medallion (obverse) Rome, Empire, Hadrian, 191-121 AD

Roman medallions were generally larger in diameter than the coins of the same period. They were little used until the 1st century AD, after which their production markedly increased. Medallions made of gold or silver possessed a high intrinsic value and were greatly coveted; they served as gifts bestowed by emperors on important political occasions. The less prized medallions in bronze were produced in large numbers for distribution at celebrations, public games, or as largesse by the emperor, although their value was more symbolic than real. On this piece Hadrian appears wearing armour and a laurel wreath.

Priest House, Glendalough, Ireland (point-cloud)

The Priests' House is situated within the main graveyard to the SW of the cathedral. A small rectangular building possibly of twelfth-century date, it has been subjected to considerable reconstruction. There is a Romanesque arched recess in the exterior of the E wall and a door in the S wall features a fragmentary tympanum with three figures holding a bell, a staff and a book. The function of this building is uncertain. It may have been a reliquary church. It became known as the 'Priest's House' as priests of the parish were buried there in the 18th century.

The Market Cross, Glendalough (colour)

SMR No.: WI023-007001- Monument Type: Market Cross Now in the Visitor Centre, the ‘Market’ Cross was reassembled in the 19th century from fragments scattered on the site. It may have originally stood opposite the west doorway of the cathedral. It bears a full-length figure of Christ wearing a crown and dressed in a knee-length tunic. Beneath him is an ecclesiastic and two standing figures, possibly patrons. The cross form is unusual and may have been influenced by Ottonian metalwork. Drilled holes in its stone surface may have held precious jewels, stones or even relics. The artistic style would suggest that it dates to the mid twelfth century
